CAN I TRAIN AFTER A MYOTHERAPY SESSION?
Dry needling session by a Geelong Myotherapist, explaining post treatment soreness and recovery
If you’ve just had a myotherapy treatment, it’s natural to ask, “Can I still train today?” or “Should I go to the gym after this?”
Whether you’re a weekend athlete, a gym regular, a local tradie, or someone simply trying to feel good in your body again, you’re not alone in asking this. At Cameron Lee Myotherapy in Geelong, we hear this question all the time. And we get it. You’ve got goals, a routine, and the last thing you want is to set yourself back or do the wrong thing after your treatment.
Here’s what you need to know to make the best choice for your body, and why doing less (for a little while) might actually help you achieve more.
Let’s start with this: It’s not a one-size-fits-all answer
The kind of treatment you received, how your body responded, and the intensity of your usual training all matter. But here’s a simple breakdown to help guide you.
If your Myotherapy session was lighter or focused on mobility:
Think of gentle soft tissue work, stretching, or guided movement patterns.
Good news, you can usually keep moving. Light walking, mobility exercises, or even a lower intensity gym session may be perfectly fine. Movement can help reinforce the benefits of treatment and keep you feeling loose and mobile.
If your treatment involved deep tissue, trigger points, dry needling or electrotherapy:
This kind of work is incredibly effective for pain, tension, and dysfunction, but it can leave you feeling a bit tender or “wiped out” for 24–48 hours.
In this case, training right after isn’t ideal.
Your nervous system and soft tissues need time to recalibrate. Pushing through with intense training can delay recovery, or worse, undo some of the progress we’ve just made.
Why resting isn’t “falling behind” — it’s part of progress
Here’s what we often tell our clients:
Recovery isn’t time wasted. It’s part of the training process.
If your body has been holding tension, compensating for pain, or overloaded from repetitive movement (hello, desk workers, athletes and tradies), it needs time to adjust to better patterns.
That little post-treatment pause? It helps your body integrate the work we’ve done, so your muscles, joints, and nervous system can truly reset not just temporarily feel better.
So, what should you do after your session?
• Hydrate and move gently: walking, light stretching and some mobility is great.
• Avoid heavy lifting or high-impact activity for 24 hours if you feel sore, tight, or tired.
• Do any exercises or mobility drills we prescribe: these are designed to support your results between sessions.
• Listen to your body: it’s smarter than we give it credit for.
But what if I miss a training day?
Missing a session isn’t failure, it’s strategy.
One rest day after treatment could mean you train smarter, move better, and stay injury-free for the long haul. That’s a trade-off worth making.
And if you’re dealing with recurring pain, niggles, or postural stress, training through it might be what’s keeping you stuck. That’s where myotherapy becomes essential, not just helpful.
